ePatterns at Sense and Sensibility
November 8, 2008 at 8:00 am | In Craft Projects, Frugality, S's Posts | 4 CommentsHave you ever seen the lovely patterns available from Sense and Sensibility? I love their Regency gowns, and I’ve been wanting to make a little girl’s one for Baby C.
They have just come out with new ePatterns, which you can download in a PDF file, and print out of your computer. This makes it so convenient! You don’t have to wait for your pattern to be shipped, you can keep the file and print out another pattern if you misplace one, and the ePatterns are also less expensive! So far they have all the Regency patterns available as ePatterns, and also the Edwardian Apron and 1910s Tea Gown. So go check them out!
Homemade Yogurt and Granola
October 2, 2008 at 3:00 pm | In Craft Projects, Frugality, Photos, Recipes, S's Posts | 5 CommentsLast week my pen pal Serenity sent me a recipe for homemade granola. I have always wanted to try my hand at making homemade yogurt, so I decided this was the perfect time to try both! I used this recipe (on the right of the page) for the yogurt.
The milk mixture is heating up… then cooling down in the sink.
The jars ready for yogurt — Incubating in the oven
The granola turned out great! – Ready to eat granola and yogurt
Everyone loved it! The two quarts of yogurt only lasted a few days… I think I’ll be making this quite often in the future!
Free Chick-fil-A!
July 11, 2008 at 5:10 pm | In Baby C, Events, Family, Frugality, Humour, Photos, S's Posts | 6 CommentsOur whole family loves Chick-fil-A, so we were very happy to hear about “Cow Appreciation Day.” Today, if you show up dressed like a cow, you get free food! A full costume will get you a combo, and if you wear only one cow accessory, you get a free entree.
So, this morning, we got to work cutting spots out of felt and construction paper and taping (or safety-pinning) them to our white clothes. Most of us also wore horns or ears attached to headbands and caps. Mom even sewed some felt onto a onesie for C. You can see some tips for costumes here.
When we got to our mall Chick-fil-A (we don’t have any free-standing ones near us), the employees looked a bit bewildered.
But, they got their manager from the back and he knew what was going on. He said “Free meals for everyone!”, and the employees rang some “cow” bells. So we ended up receiving eleven combo meals; the register rang up $100. before the cashier started inputting the discount! Yes, we have some food left over.
It was fun eating lunch in the mall dressed like cows, and pretending everything was normal. We didn’t see any bovine friends other than the ones in our group.
Here we are all decked out as cows – I’m sure you will enjoy the sight:
Couponing
November 7, 2007 at 7:49 pm | In Frugality, K's Posts | 1 CommentSince taking the awesome Supermarket Savings 101 class, we have been gradually building up a stash of coupons. It has become so much fun for us to clip coupons, organize them, and match them with store sales to get things for free or almost free.
We obtain coupons mostly from the Sunday paper, but there are also other sources where we have been able to find them. There are many printable coupon sites on the internet which are very helpful. You can print the coupons for free and they usually have a wide variety. Also, ask others to save their coupons for you if they aren’t going to use them. Just keep your eyes open and you will find coupons everywhere! The other day I found a stack of some for people to take on a table at the hospital where I volunteer.
Organizing coupons is a little bit trickier than obtaining them. Once we had built up a nice stash of coupons, we were aware that our little envelope divider was not capable of handling the job. So, last week, we ordered a large coupon box from Refund Cents. Today I tackled the project of transferring all of our coupons from the envelope to the box.
Here is a picture of what our previous method looked like…
As you can see, it wasn’t working very well. We had many coupons yet to be clipped and organized.
Here is a picture of the coupons glad to be in their new home…
Bargain Shopping

Recently our family has been learning how to be more frugally minded. We completed Crystal Paine’s Supermarket Savings 101 online course and were introduced to the world of bargain shopping! It has become quite a hobby for us. We started taking advantage of the super deals at CVS and Walgreens each week. We’ve also been clipping coupons and matching them with sales. Here is a picture of what we bought at CVS today for $0.43 out of pocket. We also got paid back $18.00 in Extra Care Bucks (the CVS card rewards which you can use like money on your next purchase).
We have really enjoyed shopping frugally. It allows us to give more to others in need and is great practice for our future lives. Even if we can’t use an item that is available for free or pennies, we will get it anyway and give it away to someone we know can use it. I would strongly encourage you to check out the Supermarket Savings class. Even if you are already a seasoned bargain shopper, I promise that it will be an encouragement to you.
