Bad News, Good News

Would you consider yourself to be a good person?  If yes, here’s a little test to see if that’s true.

1. Have you ever told a lie?

2. Have you ever stolen anything?

3. Have you ever taken the Lord’s name in vain?

4. Have you ever shown disrespect to your parents?

5. Have you ever had feelings of jealousy toward someone else’s possessions?

If you answered yes to any one of those questions, you’ve broken the Ten Commandments, God’s Law, and His standard of goodness.  Standing before God on Judgment Day, do you think you would be innocent or guilty?  The correct answer is guilty.  The Bible says, “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”  (Romans 3:23)  This is the bad news.  Because of our sinfulness, we are destined for eternal punishment and separation from God in hell.  “For the wages of sin is death…” (Romans 6:23)

But, there is good news!  Romans 6:23 continues with, “…but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”  God sent His only Son, Jesus, to come into this world as a man and die on the cross for you and me, taking our punishment as His own.  And “…whosoever believeth in him shall not perish, but have everlasting life.”  (John 3:16)  The Bible says that if we confess this with our mouth and believe it in our heart, we shall be saved.  (Romans 10:9)

All it takes is a simple prayer admitting your sinfulness and turning away from those sins.  Something like, “Dear God, I admit that I’m a sinner (confess your specific sins).  I know that I deserve eternal torment in hell.  I believe that you died on the cross to pay the penalty for those sins.  I repent from my sins and give my life to you.  Thank you for taking me to heaven when I die and giving me eternal life.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

If you truly mean it, you become a new creation!  Read your Bible daily, and obey what you read.  God will never let you down.
