The Art of Listening
July 31, 2009 at 9:01 am | In Bible Verses, K's Posts | Leave a CommentOne pleasant Sunday after the church service had ended and the gentle piano postlude began, two lady friends started a polite chat between themselves. The exchanging of stories from each of their weeks commenced, and the chit-chat turned into a rather lengthy stay. One of the dear ladies was in the middle of recounting a tale involving her son and his latest escapade across the plains of Africa when a tragic event occurred. The split second it took for this unwelcome visitor to intrude was enough to extinguish the entire conversation. Who or what was this destructive visitor, you ask? Well, his name is Impatience, and he graced this Sunday afternoon conversation in the form of a quick glance at a wristwatch.
“Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.” (Proverbs 19:20)
It has been pointed out that God created man with two ears and one mouth so that he may listen twice as much as he speaks. While I have not found this statement in Scripture, there are many other verses that exhort us to listen. Proverbs especially seems to be filled with them…
“Bow down thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply thine heart unto my knowledge.” (Proverbs 22:17)
There are many things we are told to listen to in Scripture, including:
1) God’s Voice (John 10:1-5)
2) Our Parents’ Instructions (Proverbs 13:1)
3) The Cry of the Poor and Needy (Proverbs 21:13)
What can we do to be good listeners in everyday life? First, we must make and keep good eye contact. This assures the speaker that you are indeed paying attention. Do you keep your eyes on God when He is trying to speak to you?
Second, it is important that you not be easily distracted. While some interruptions are necessary, true listeners will block out all competing noise. What ”noise” distracts you from hearing God?
Third, one who listens will internalize what he or she has heard, and desire to act upon it. Whether you provide a comment in response or nod in agreement, you show the speaker that you are thinking about and understand what he or she has just said. Do you take time to ruminate or chew on what God says to you with the goal of obedience?
God makes it very clear that one who listens is wise, and “Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace is counted wise…” (Proverbs 17:28)
6 Ways to Spend Quality Time with Siblings

I recently enjoyed reading the exhortations of Handmaiden and Serenity about spending time with our siblings. This is a subject close to my heart, as it happens to be one of my love languages.
I thought I’d add some of my favorite ways to do it, so here goes…
1. Pray with them - Pray for each other, together! This not only will create a deep bond between you and your siblings, it will draw you closer to the Lord.
2. Read with/to them - This is a fun activity you can do with the little ones as well as the older ones. From Nancy Drew books with the girls, to R.M. Ballantyne books with your brothers, to silly picture books with the little ones, all will enjoy reading with you.
3. Play with them - Yes, playing with them is a good thing! While playing, you can teach them – by example – so many things! How to be a good sport, for one.
4. Talk with them - Have quality conversations with your brothers and sisters. Ask their opinions on different things, share with them what the Lord is teaching you, and listen to everything they have to share.
5. Share your hobby with them - Sometimes it can seem inconvenient when your little siblings always want to do what you’re doing, but let them help you/watch when you’re cooking, sewing, etc. and they’ll be thrilled.
6. Work with them – This one has double benefits: you’ll get your chores done more quickly and build teamwork at the same time.

Kayla: The Seamstress by Sara Tuvel Bernstein ~ I chose this book on an outing to the bookstore with our great uncle after being naturally drawn to the history section. I’m not sure why, but I’ve always loved reading the stories of those who survived the Holocaust. The suffering people experienced humbles me and reminds me to be grateful for all God has blessed me with, including things I so often take for granted and consider “basics” like a roof over my head, a comfortable bed to sleep on at night, and a loving family. This book was no exception. I literally couldn’t put it down, and Stephanie even commented once or twice about my being glued to this book because it is so uncharacteristic of me. ~smile~ However, I do recommend that younger girls be sure to ask permission of their parents before reading this book (as always).
The Elements of Style by William Strunk and E.B. White ~ I was sent this small book as part of the homework for my Verity English class, but it hardly felt like study material. ~smile~ I found the writing tips to be very insightful and helpful in improving my writing. The humorous presentation makes this book a fun read, in my opinion.
The Duggars: 20 and Counting by Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar ~ I’m sure most if not all of you are familiar with the Duggar family and their eighteen children. I was excited to find this book at the library and sped through it very quickly. I loved reading Mr. and Mrs. Duggar’s testimony of how the Lord brought them together and later led them to have so many children. Reading Mrs. Duggar’s practical tips on managing the home and training young children encouraged me greatly in serving my family and loving my siblings. This was a very refreshing book (with lots of fun family pictures, too)!
Life’s Little Instruction Book, Vol. II by H. Jackson Brown Jr. ~ While I don’t agree with the title of this book (The Bible is the only “life instruction book” I’ll follow!), it was a fun, laughter-inducing read. I read the one-line tips aloud in the girls’ room, and we all enjoyed the absurdity of some of the tips like: “Never tell a man he is losing his hair. He already knows.” Some were thought-provoking, however, such as: “Smile when you pick up the phone. The caller will hear it in your voice.” I’ve started applying this one, and it actually makes a difference in how I feel!
Beauty: A Retelling of the Story of Beauty and the Beast by Robin McKinley ~ I never really liked the Disney movie Beauty and the Beast. I’m not exactly sure what turned me off… maybe it was the part about the nice, pretty girl falling in love with an ugly, angry monster? I don’t know. But when I heard about this book, I decided to give it a try, hoping that since it was retelling the story, I might sort of enjoy it. Well, enjoy it I did! Robin McKinley did a beautiful job with the descriptions in this book, and I loved her twist on the main character, Beauty. Also a plus: the beast in this story is much nicer. ~smile~
Stephanie:
Mrs. Lirriper by Charles Dickens ~ I loved this creative book of short stories! They all centered around a boarding house run by the titular lady and are told by several different authors, including Dickens.
Christmas with Grandma Elsie ~ I really enjoyed the thirteenth book in this series as it followed the escapades of Lulu Raymond.
(I also read “Beauty” and enjoyed it as well!
)
Allison: I read both Beauty and Christmas with Grandma Elsie and enjoyed them both.
Matthew and Mark’s Birthday

Our little brothers’ birthday was on Tuesday. It’s hard to believe they’re four already! We had a long day of celebrating. To start, we took advantage of a free movie being shown at the theater that morning. Then we bought a kiddie pool, which the little ones played in after lunch. That night, we all went to Chuck E. Cheese’s for pizza and fun. Here are a few photos…

Tribute
July 6, 2009 at 3:24 pm | In K's Posts | 1 CommentLast week, our grandma’s funeral was held. I’d like to share the video slideshow that was played at the service. Go to this link to view it.
This week our family will be attempting to venture back into “normal” daily life which we haven’t seen for approximately three months. We’ll just have to see if that includes any blogging… :)
