Sadly, this is a little blurry, but at least it captures the moment.  :)   We so enjoyed meeting and visiting with the Wissmanns and hearing more of their wonderful music.

Wisdom

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.  (James 1:5)

In James we are told to ask for wisdom, but what is it exactly?  I love this definition from IBLP:

Wisdom is: Seeing and responding to life’s situations from God’s frame of reference.

I didn’t really understand it though, until I read about Solomon in 1 Kings 3.  I can so relate to his feelings of inadequacy.  God had just made him king, and he knew he could not do the job well on his own.

7 And now O Lord my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in.

8 And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude.

So when God asked Solomon what he would like given to him, he knew to ask for the thing that would make him a successful leader: the ability to see situations from God’s perspective and judge rightly.

9 Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?

Solomon had chosen well.  He realized that to be a great king you don’t need riches or popularity.  Having wisdom — seeing things from God’s perspective — makes the difference between a great or poor leader.  After all, He is the perfect Judge.

Scripture Memory Challenge

February 20, 2009 at 9:18 pm | In Bible Verses, Events, K's Posts | 6 Comments

During the month of January, Stephanie and I pariticipated in a Scripture memory challenge over at LivingtheJourney.com, a blog for Journey to the Heart alumni.  The challenge was to memorize the 26 verses of II Timothy 2 in 26 days.  A challenge it was, but by God’s grace, we completed it!  The experience was such a blessing and encouragement that we desired to host a similar event right here.

Starting on March 1st, we will work on memorizing one verse of Colossians 3 (KJV) each day with the goal of being able to quote the whole chapter from memory on March 25th.  Each day, we will have a short commentary of sorts from one of us or a guest blogger sharing insights God has revealed and practical ways we can apply the verse to our lives.

Scripture memory and meditation should hold large importance in our hearts as children of God.  The blessings for those who delight in God’s Word are unfathomable.

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.  But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.  And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.”  (Psam 1:1-3)

So, I hope you will join us on March 1st!  My goal in letting you all know ahead of time is that you will spread the word and let others know about it so we can have maximum encouragement and glory to the Lord!  Check back tomorrow and we’ll have some buttons ready that you can post on your blog.

Valentine’s Day

February 18, 2009 at 11:31 am | In Bible Verses, Family, Photos, Quotes, S's Posts | 3 Comments

We had a lovely Valentine’s Day!  We know not everyone celebrates it, but we love to have a special dinner together as a family and make cards for each other. :)  Since we had a busy weekend with our church’s missions conference going on, we celebrated on Monday.  Here are a few photos…

Dad’s cards for us are always funny… We like to read them out loud. :)

We also rejoice in God’s love for us.  One of our favorite passages on it is Romans 8:38-39, “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

January in Books

Kayla –  Merchant Maiden by Crystal Paine – This was a nice little booklet with lots of business ideas for young ladies who want to earn some money from home.  Even though I don’t feel led to start my own business (yet, at least), I enjoyed reading all the creative ideas and testimonies.  If you’re trying to think of some way you can earn a little extra cash while still fulfilling your duties at home, I would suggest you read this book!

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott – This book was on my “to read” list for quite some time and I was really excited to finally have the opportunity to read it.  I now understand why it’s such a favorite!  I absolutely loved the sweet story of the four March sisters.  At times, I couldn’t put it down.  Now I really want to see the movie, but must wait until Stephanie reads the book so it isn’t spoiled for her.  :)

Do Hard Things by Alex & Brett Harris – Wow!  This read was simply amazing.  I was challenged, convicted, and inspired so many times throughout reading Do Hard Things.  Every time I read a chapter, I felt like getting up and doing something productive for God.  I was encouraged to be a rebel with a I Timothy 4:12 cause.  “Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.”  The standards for young people in the world today are extremely low compared to God’s expectations of us.  For this reason, we must band together and live out I Timothy 4:12, being an example to the world and fellow believers.  If you’re a young person and you haven’t read this book, you simply must get your hands on it soon.

Stephanie –

Emotional Purity by Heather Paulsen – I really recommend this book!  See Kayla’s review of it here.

Kathleen’s Shaken Dreams by Tracy Craven – This is about an eleven-year-old girl at the start of the Great Depression.  I really enjoyed it!

The Pot of Basil by John Keats – I checked out a book of assorted poems by Keats from the library just to read this one, because it was referenced to in a book I loved, Rose in Bloom by Alcott.  It turned out to be an unfortunate love story, and I didn’t like it.  Keats is very odd…  I don’t think his poems are the type for me.  lol

Allison - I didn’t finish any books in January.

Diligence rewarded

When I was two years old, my granddad gave me a large piggy bank.  As a child, I eagerly put any and all coins I found or was given inside my beloved bright pink pig.  Over the years, it had gotten quite full.  As I approached my 18th birthday, I thought that it would be a good idea to open it then since turning 18 is usually seen as the point where one leaves childhood.

img_8336

I ended up cracking it open last Monday.  It was quite the adventure trying to figure out the best way to open it and then sorting and counting all of the bills and coins.

It was fun to finally see the results of all the years of penny-saving here and there.  :)   This project definitely taught me patience and perseverance!

A big “Thank you!” to those who wished me a happy birthday on Saturday!  :)   It was a simply wonderful day!  Here’s a recap with some photos…

I awoke in a cheerful mood around 8 am, partly because my parents came in to our bedroom singing “Happy Birthday to You.”  :)   When I walked into the dining room for breakfast, I found a huge balloon, peanut m&m’s, and a dozen roses on the table just for me!  Stephanie made some really yummy chocolate chip waffles for us.  Wasn’t that sweet?  :)

At noon, we had Ladybug’s soccer game.  It was quite cold outside…

After the soccer game, we went to our favorite pizza place for lunch.  They have the best whole wheat vegetable pizza, garlic rolls, and caesar salad!

After lunch was another soccer game (for Picasso) and then a fellowship for ATI families at our house.  We talked, ate dinner, and played games like Four on the Couch, Catchphrase, Whoonu, and One to One-Hundred.
