Our family in a nutshell

November 24, 2008 at 10:57 pm | In Family, K's Posts, Photos | 5 Comments

Bonnie recently asked for a post introducing all of our family members.  We hadn’t realized we had never formally introduced them, so we apologize for any confusion this may have caused.  :)   We know there are a lot of us… even people in real life can’t keep us all straight!  I’m not sure I can fit all of us into a “nutshell”, but I’ll try!

 dadmom

These are our parents… known to us as Dad and Mom.  :)   We are so grateful for everything they have done and continue to do for us.  They have been the best parents we could ever ask for, and we wouldn’t trade them for a different set of parents any day.  :)   Dad is extremely talented at making us laugh, whether that be through tickling us or telling us funny stories from his childhood.  He enjoys eating healthfully and likes to jog or bike when he has time.  Mom is always willing to serve others before herself and never turns away an opportunity to listen or sympathize.  In her practically non-existant free time, she likes to sew, play games with her children, and read biographies.

When myself, Stephanie, and Allison were 5, 3, and 1 1/2 (respectively), we got an adorable baby brother!

gil

On this blog, we’ll call him Picasso.  He is now 12 years old, and an asset to our family.  He dutifully carries out his chores each day and week and also helps to take care of the little ones.  The artist of the family, he enjoys drawing, painting, and creating most anything.  Reading is one of his favorite hobbies and the reading light we gave him for Christmas last year has since been the cause of several all-night reading marathons.  :)   He is also a skilled violinist who has promised to play at all of his sisters weddings, Lord-willing.  :)

Next comes our sweet 10-year-old sister, Ladybug.  Always willing to help others, she has the gift of serving.  Whether we need her to dress the baby or unload the dishwasher, she’s ready to get it done.  In her spare time, she loves to write letters to friends, play games with her siblings, and journal.  She played basketball this fall on a league for the 4th year in a row and enjoyed that very much.  Being fairly tall for her age (an inch shorter than her older brother), she had many opportunities to shoot and make baskets!  Ladybug is the punctual time-keeper of the family and likes to let us know when it’s time to get ready for something.  :)

This is our 8-year-old sister, who we will call Filly.  She is a nature-lover at heart and has a particular affinity to horses and everything to do with them!  She is a wonderful big sister to her younger siblings and enjoys making gifts for her loved ones whether it is their birthday, Christmas, other special occasion, or not.  :)   One of her favorite things to do is read, and she has been known to devour mysteries in under 48 hours.

 img_0782

Tuffy is our 6-year-old little brother.  He is a car fanatic as evidenced by the picture above, and has been since he was very little.  He would often point out cars on the road that were the same as our Dad’s work car when he was about three years old.  He loves to go everywhere with Mom, and if he’s not able to, he waves goodbye to her from our front window and she is expected to wave back.  :)   The nickname Tuffy was given him by us when he was a baby.  He would crawl around and pretend to be a dog, panting and everything.  For some reason, we named this dog Tuffy.  :)

Peanut is one of our loveable 3-year-old twins.  At this age, he is constantly talking, asking questions, and learning about the world.  His best buddy is the little guy pictured below, but he enjoys the company of all of his siblings.  He can often be found loving on his little sister, even though she doesn’t always return the same affection.  :)   Some of Peanut’s favorite things to do are ride his bike, run, and get good and dirty.

img_6445

Biscuit is our second lovable 3-year-old twin.  He was nicknamed Biscuit as a baby because he was a “little brown biscuit”, with dark hair and darker skin than all the rest of his siblings.  A tad independent and somewhat of a wanderer, we have to constantly keep an eye on him in public places!  He is best friends with his twin and they can be found together about 90% of the time.  (It was hard to find pictures of them individually!)  Biscuit loves to be read to, is a talented color-er, and hums when he’s eating.  :)

I think most of you know Cherry, as we can’t help but share cute pictures of her frequently.  :)   A little about her:  she is #10, the baby of our family.  She is now 14 months old and walking all over the place at home, but seldom for strangers.  She is very shy around people outside of our family, so if you happen to get a smile or moment to hold her in peace before she starts protesting, count yourself blessed.  :)   At home, she is a spunky, happy, outgoing little girl who is adored by all!

Feminine Friday – Hairstyle Tutorial

For Feminine Friday today, I would like to share with you a hairstyle tutorial.  One of our favorite ways to express our femininity and love of girly things is through our hairstyles.  We each have long hair, as you know, and that is one of the easiest ways to show that you are a girl.  That’s not to say that there is anything wrong with short hair, though.  It can go both ways as I have seen short hairstyles that still look feminine.  Just as long as you look like and are glad to be a young lady!  :)

Have you ever thanked God for hair?  Hair is just one of the many blessings God has given to us as girls.  Hair adds so much to a person’s countenance as a whole and provides another aspect of fun to a girl’s life, don’t you think so?  I have to remember to be grateful that I have hair on my head in the first place regardless of how uncooperative with me it may be.  :)

Now for the tutorial. This hairstyle is something like the Regency updo at In Timely Fashion. It works best with curly or wavy hair.

Twist up hair and secure with clips.

img_40401

Take small sections of hair and wrap around your fingers to form a small loop. Secure one side of the loop down with clip.

Continue until all the hair is up in little loops, like so:

In the picture below, I added some bobby pins with beaded flowers and butterflies on them for a touch of cuteness.

And here’s our lovely model, Stephanie.  :)

Favorite Names

November 18, 2008 at 11:23 am | In S's Posts | 9 Comments

Serenity is hosting our favorite names!  Check it out here.

My favorite names have changed a lot over the years.  It’s funny now looking at old lists of mine, or just thinking of the crazy ideas I had when I was younger.  For instance, I used to want to have triplet girls, who I would name Eleanor, Elsie and Elizabeth. :)

As for our names, we have always thought our parents did a great job. :)   And as we’ve grown older, we have had fun suggesting names for our siblings.

So, without further ado, here are my top ten favorite names (for now at least).

  1. Violet
  2. Adeline or Adelaide
  3. Eleanor
  4. Jane
  5. Sophie
  6. Michelle
  7. Kathryn
  8. Phillip
  9. Timothy
  10. Peter

October in Books

reading

October was a pretty good reading month for us.  Here are our takes on the books we finished…

Kayla:

Ester Ried (Isabella Alden) – Like Stephanie mentioned in her review, this is an amazing book!  I loved it from start to finish.  Although I didn’t cry like she did, I did enjoy it immensely.  Several parts gave me that shivery feeling you get when something devastating, truthful, or ironic is said.  I was convicted as well as encouraged by Ester’s testimony.  I came away feeling motivated to be a better sister and better Christian witness to this lost world.  The author, Isabella Alden, was such an inspiration to me in the way that she wrote this story, boldly proclaiming the truth in God’s Word.  I have never read a book like this… it is simply a treasure.

Daughters of Destiny (Noelle Wheeler) – We girls finally finished reading this book aloud.  It took us quite awhile as many times we didn’t want to read before bed but talk!  :)   However, when we were in the mood for reading, the stories in this book encouraged us, inspired us, and humored us.  It was a very educational book in which we learned about many different heroines of the faith including Martha Finley, Fanny Crosby, and Katharina von Bora.  I highly recommend it.

Authentic Beauty (Leslie Ludy) – This was another great read, but is not recommended for younger readers, due to subject matter.  Leslie gives her testimony of going through her teenage years in public school and falling into wrong friendships and a sinful lifestyle, and then coming back to fall in love with her true Prince.  She exhorts girls to give their whole heart to their Prince and devote their entire being to Him first and foremost.  She also stresses the importance of cleaning out your heart and “inner sanctuary” so that you can experience a pure, unhindered, intimate relationship with God.  The only thing I disliked about this book was the little bit of somewhat graphic content.  I understand the need to be forthright and honest with girls, but the language and subject matter was not what I am used to (coming from a homeschooling, pretty sheltered family).  This is why it’s recommended for older young ladies.  Other than that, I enjoyed it and was challenged!  Leslie Ludy’s site and blog, www.setapartgirl.com, is a great resource as well.

Stephanie:

The Winter of Red Snow (Kristiana Gregory) -

This is the diary of a fictional girl who was ten-years-old at the time of the Revolutionary War. Abigail and her family live in Valley Forge, where the Army camped during the winter of 177-78. I enjoyed Abigail’s perspective on things. I love reading historical fiction, especially diaries like this one.

Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen) -

Many of you have read this book, or at least have seen the movie. We first viewed the movie last spring, and loved it. I enjoyed the book as well, although I think it would have been better if I had read it before watching the movie.

Allison:

Kathleen’s Shaken Dreams (Tracy Leininger Craven)-

For my birthday, I received all four books in the Kathleen McKenzie series from A Life Of Faith. The series is about an eleven year old girl growing up in the 1930s, dealing with the hardships of the depression. I had been a bit prejudiced against them, since A Life Of Faith has revised the original Elsie Dinsmore books, changing some of the names Martha Finley had originally given the characters, and I don’t think I’ll ever read ALOF’s version. But I really enjoyed the first book in the Kathleen series, and I’ve already started the second book.

ePatterns at Sense and Sensibility

November 8, 2008 at 8:00 am | In Craft Projects, Frugality, S's Posts | 4 Comments

Have you ever seen the lovely patterns available from Sense and Sensibility?  I love their Regency gowns, and I’ve been wanting to make a little girl’s one for Baby C.

They have just come out with new ePatterns, which you can download in a PDF file, and print out of your computer.  This makes it so convenient!  You don’t have to wait for your pattern to be shipped, you can keep the file and print out another pattern if you misplace one, and the ePatterns are also less expensive!  So far they have all the Regency patterns available as ePatterns, and also the Edwardian Apron and 1910s Tea Gown.  So go check them out!

Feminine Friday

femininefriday2

We were inspired by the recent comment from A Still Small Voice suggesting that we do a post on Biblical girlhood and the role of young women with the idea for “Feminine Fridays”.  On these “Feminine Fridays”, we will post anything having to do with Biblical femininity such as dress, attitudes, relationships, etc.

For our first Feminine Friday post, we would like to share with you what we see as an invaluable resource.  I’m not sure if we have mentioned it before, but you may have noticed that my mother, sisters, and I try to dress modestly and in a way which will not cause our brothers in Christ to stumble.  Our family has held this conviction for several years.

TheRebelution.com's Modesty Survey

However, the definition of ”modest” is often difficult to pinpoint by we girls who don’t think in the same way men do.  That is why we found the Modesty Survey to be so helpful.  It is a survey conducted by the Harris brothers of The Rebelution and filled out by many Christian young men.  The Modesty Survey lets us girls know exactly what may be a stumbling block to guys.  I personally learned a lot by reading the answers on the survey and was greatly encouraged by it.  I know this resource has been around for quite awhile now, and it is likely that many of you are aware of it, but I believe it is worth emphasizing again.  I enjoy referring back to the survey myself when I need some encouragement.  If you’ve never read the Modesty Survey, I urge you to look it over with an open mind and heart.

Please vote for our mom!

November 6, 2008 at 9:15 pm | In K's Posts | 2 Comments

Over at Confessions of an Apron Queen, there is a contest going on.  A few weeks back, our mom made The Apron Queen’s Ay Caramba! Chicken Spaghetti (it was delicious, by the way!) and did the chicken dance.  (You can see pictures here.)  This qualified her to win a prize – four aprons for our family!  Now everyone is voting for the blogger who deserves to win, and we’re asking you to please (pretty please) vote for our mom.  It only takes a second.  Go here and you’ll see the poll on the right sidebar.  Our mom is listed as Kathy – Mom of Many.  Thank you so much!

I figured out that the next time his birthday will be on a Presidential election day will be in 2036, when he’s 34-years-old. :)
