A Brother’s Birthday

September 30, 2008 at 4:49 pm | In Events, Family, K's Posts, Photos | 3 Comments

Our eldest brother, S, turned 12 on Sunday.  We went to church in the morning, gave him some gifts afterwards, and then drove to the D family’s home for the monthly HSC meeting (a fellowship for ATI families).  This month it was known as The S-Party.  :)

Here he is opening some of his gifts.  We gave him some new ties, a book about Presidents, and a chess set – all things he loves!  :)

We brought a cake and everyone sang “Happy Birthday.”

Fun with friends!

Here are some pictures of little C’s birthday.  She was treated like a princess all day long!  :)

“Why is everybody singing and looking at me?”

“I don’t know what this stuff is, but it sure tastes good!”

We thank the Lord for the blessing little C has been to our family!

Creamy Fudge

September 17, 2008 at 8:59 pm | In A's Posts, Photos, Recipes | 4 Comments

Last week, I decided to make some fudge. I used a recipe from Good Housekeeping, and it turned out great.

16 squares (16 ounces) semisweet chocolate, chopped

1 square (1 ounce) unsweetened chocolate, chopped

1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk

1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1/8 teaspoon salt

  • Line 8-inch square baking pan with foil, extending foil above rim of opposite sides.
  • In 2-quart saucepan, combine semisweet and unsweetened chocolates and condensed milk. Cook, stirring constantly, over medium-low heat until chocolates have melted and mixture is smooth, about 5 minutes
  • Remove saucepan from heat; stir in vanilla and salt. Pour chocolate mixture into prepared pan; spread evenly. Refrigerate until firm, at least 4 hours or up to overnight.
  • Remove fudge from pan by lifting edges of foil. Cut into 8 strips, then cut each strip crosswise into 8 pieces. Place pieces between waxed paper in airtight.

For chocolate walnut fudge, prepare as directed but stir in 1 cup of walnuts, coarsely chopped, with vanilla and salt.

Apron Swap Update

Now that our first apron swap has officially come to a close I thought I would give an update.  Most everyone has e-mailed to let me know that they have sent and received their aprons, but if you have not received yours, please don’t hesitate to e-mail me!

Most of you have also sent in pictures of your lovely aprons…I have been adding them to the link on the top right corner of this page entitled “Apron Swap!”  To those of you who didn’t participate in the swap, be sure to check out all of the wonderful work these ladies have done!

We really enjoyed hosting this swap and hope you all have enjoyed participating.  It is our prayer that you will be reminded by this apron to serve the Lord through serving your family whether you are preparing meals, cleaning house, or anything in between!

Ester Ried

September 12, 2008 at 8:00 am | In Bible Verses, Books, S's Posts | 4 Comments

I just finished reading one of my new favorite books: Ester Ried (aka Ester Ried: Asleep and Awake*).  It was written by Isabella Alden, a pastor’s wife.  It reminds me of Elsie Dinsmore, though probably only because the two books are both Christian fiction written by women in the late 19th century.  It’s actually the exact opposite of Elsie, but the motives for writing the two — to help young people grow as Christians — are the same.

In the book, Ester is a professing Christian, but she’s struggling.  She struggles with a bad attitude and with wasting her life.  She’s eighteen, and has been a Christian for a long time, but she doesn’t live for Christ.  She is not a good influence on her three younger siblings, nor on the lost people who her family boards.

This was a convicting book to read.  It’s so easy to slack off on being a good witness for Christ, and living the way He wants us to.  But Ester Ried shows that the effort to follow Him is worth it — I cried at Ester’s turning point, and two other times while reading this book, which isn’t typical for me.

I really recommend this book!  This is the first in a series, and I’m planning on reading the next one soon.

Frog Quilt

This is my latest project. I started it about a month ago but it won’t be finished for awhile yet because the bobbin case on my mom’s sewing machine broke. :( I had just started the quilting process. This is a picture of the quilt top.

And this is a close up on the frog fabric. Can you see the little bees in the corner?

Room Photos

Here are some photos from our newly painted bedroom!  The look isn’t quite completed yet, as we’d like to add some curtains (probably a white valance), a new bedspread for K (her current one is purple/green), and a rug.  We’re pleased with how it looks so far, though!  The pink was at first a little brighter than what we thought it would be, but it’s turned out nice.

In the photo below, the pink looks slightly darker.
