Princesses in Disguise Apron Swap!
June 30, 2008 at 3:25 pm | In Craft Projects, K's Posts | 3 CommentsOur mom participated in an apron swap over at A Feathered Nest a few months ago and we thought it’d be fun to host one here. Summer is our favorite time to do homemaking projects!
Here’s the deal: If you would like to participate, e-mail us with your full name, mailing address, e-mail address, blog URL (if you have one), if you’d be willing to ship internationally or not, and your color preferences (your favorite, any you just don’t care for, etc.). We will not share your information with anyone except your swap partner. Giving your blog address allows the person making your apron to read more about you and get a feel for what style and colors you might like.
July 13th (two weeks from now) is the deadline for signing up. Sometime after that, we will randomly assign partners to everyone and e-mail you with your partner’s information. You will then have until the deadline of August 30th to make the apron and get it to your partner. If you’d like, you may include a recipe or two with your apron. Note: You will not be making an apron for the same person who will be making one for you. This provides the opportunity for you to make two new friends! I suggest you buy delivery confirmation when you mail it in order to keep track of any “lost” aprons. When you have mailed your apron, email us and let us know so we can check you off the list.
The only rule: The apron must be handmade by you. Be creative. You may put pockets, embellishments, whatever you would like. There are several free patterns here. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to e-mail us! This is going to be a lot of fun!
***Update: Please feel free to copy & paste our button onto your blog/website to spread the word. It should link back to us (Please let us know if it doesn’t work!).
Humorous Happenings
June 28, 2008 at 11:07 am | In Family, Humour, S's Posts | 8 CommentsInspired by Handmaiden at Handmaidens of the Shepherd, we thought we’d compile some funny stories from our home to share with you. We’ll publish volumes as we recall them. Here are a few to start…
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
While volunteering at the hospital, an older Hispanic man approached K and said, sounding quite shocked, “¡Que blanco!” (How white!) K had no idea what to reply to this man, so she just smiled. “¿De donde tu eres?” (Where are you from?) “¡Aqui!” (Here!) “¿De ______?” (From ______?) “Sí.” (Yes) He then declared, and I quote, ”¡Pero (but), you don’t go to the beach!”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One night, all of us girls were in bed talking for a while before falling asleep. K and I were carrying on a conversation (or trying to) while A and C were talking, and quite loudly at that. I was asking K to repeat herself when she suddenly exclaimed to the others, “Guys, be quiet! We can’t hear each other think!” There was one moment of silence before we all burst into laughter. (She, of course, had been attempting to say, “We can’t hear ourselves think!”)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One day while on vacation, we decided to pack a lunch and take a leisurely drive through town. After a while Mom and Dad mentioned something about starting to look for a picnic table to eat at. About ten minutes later we were taking a detour through a cemetery when our then four-year-old brother asked, exasperated, “Where are the picnic tables?!”
Lies Young Women Believe
June 24, 2008 at 5:21 pm | In Bible Verses, Books, K's Posts | 6 Comments
As you have probably noticed from our widget on the right, I’ve been reading the book Lies Young Women Believe(by Nancy Leigh DeMoss and Dannah Gresh.) My mom bought it for us girls while S and I were away at Journey to the Heart. We had heard about it while up there and were pleasantly surprised to find it on the kitchen counter when we got home.
When I first read the list of lies in the table of contents, I pretty much decided I didn’t really believe any of them. If that had been true, I probably wouldn’t be blogging about it, huh?
The very first lie was “God is not enough.” Of course, looking at that, who would admit to believing it right off the bat? Well, as the authors say, the way you live your life shows which lies you believe. You obviously can’t tell what is a lie and what is not when you are deceived, right? Satan loves to give us half-truths to distract us from the real Truth in God’s Word; Eve was his very first target.
As I was reading about this lie #1, “God is not enough”, the Lord really convicted me. He showed me how often I look to people to fill my emotional tank and the “hole” that only God can fit in. In doing this, I would always be unsatisfied and craving more time with friends because my heart’s ”hole” was never filled completely. This sent the message to God that He wasn’t enough for me even though I “knew” in my head that He loved me.
When I finally realized all this, I confessed it to the Lord and asked Him for the grace to stop (unreasonably) expecting other humans to meet my emotional needs. Let us make this our prayer, “Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee. My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion forever.” (Psalm 73:25-26)
Have you read Lies Young Women Believe? If so, what did the Lord teach you through it?
A Cute, Little ‘Do
June 17, 2008 at 3:53 pm | In A's Posts, Hair, Photos | 5 CommentsI love playing with my sisters’ hair. I try braiding, curling, and all kinds of different styles. Here is a little tutorial on a cute, little hairstyle I made up.
This hairstyle works best on medium length hair. I wish I could do it on myself, but my hair is too long. My sister C’s hair is the perfect length for this hairstyle.
Braid hair, leaving about 2″ of hair below the ponytail
Then, make an opening at the top of the braid…
…gently push the end of the braid through and secure with bobby pins.
Cute and simple.:)
Thanks to my little sister C for being my model.:)
In South Carolina
June 14, 2008 at 3:56 pm | In Events, Family, Photos, S's Posts | 3 CommentsWe had a wonderful, relaxing time on our vacation in Pickens, SC. Here are a few photos from the week:
We had quite an adventure while horseback riding through the hills. We were crossing a creek, and most of us had already reached the other side. Only A and I were in the water at this point. There were a few boys playing in the small waterfall to my right. I didn’t pay much attention to them, but apparently the horse I was riding was spooked by them, because he suddenly and very abruptly turned left, while I fell off into the water. It happened so fast I didn’t even have time to try to stay on. A’s horse turned around too and took off galloping the way we had come. My horse followed hers, and eventually they both stopped.
Now, you can imagine how scared everyone else was, first seeing my horse without me on it, then me in the water, and then A nowhere in sight. I was fine, though, because I had fallen into deeper water than the horses had been walking through. There was a drop-off in the creek, so I fell into water where I couldn’t touch the bottom then climbed back into the shallow rocky part. Our trail-guide helped us lead the horses back to the creek where I hopped on and continued the ride.
Here we are at the Greenville Zoo, where K and A met their pen pals for the first time. They started writing about seven years ago after meeting on the internet.
Some of the beautiful scenery
And lastly, here we are kayaking and pedal-boating at a park.
Anointed for Greater Works
June 12, 2008 at 6:46 pm | In Bible Verses, Events, Family, K's Posts, Photos | 1 CommentOn the last day of the Nashville ATI conference we had a really neat experience. Over the course of the week, (and also at the Journey) Mr. Gothard talked several times about the power that comes when hands are laid on someone in prayer and they are anointed with oil. Mr. Gothard himself had his pastor and elders do this to him in January and testified of the amazing power of the Lord that had been present in his life since then. He explained how in Hebrews 6:1-3, it talks about the laying on of hands, but has usually been interpreted to mean that it is only for those in the ministry. However, when you look at the rest of the items mentioned in the list, it is clear that they are for all believers. In Psalm 105:15, it says that those who are anointed have a special protection from evil from the Lord. (Mr. Gothard has a new book out about anointing but I can’t seem to find it on the IBLP website. I guess they haven’t put it on there yet.)
Anyways, after hearing all about anointing for great works, we were ready to do it ourselves. We were glad when Mr. Gothard offered to do it for anyone who wanted to have it done that last day of the conference. He started anointing people at around 7:30 am and didn’t finish (excepting some short breaks) until about 8:00 pm. My dad was able to be anointed in the morning because he was close to the front of the sanctuary, but since us girls and our oldest brother were in our classes, we did it later that night. Our mom also was able to do it with us. In fact, we were the second-to-last family to be anointed. Our friends from church were the last (but not least :) ).
It was a very meaningful experience for us. Mr. Gothard prayed a prayer over each of us asking the Lord to use our lives for His kingdom and His glory. We each prayed a prayer silently dedicating the rest of our lives to the Lord and His service. I’m excited to see how God will answer these prayers.
Nashville
June 11, 2008 at 8:57 pm | In Events, Family, Photos, S's Posts | 3 CommentsWell, we are finally home sweet home! It feels nice to be back to our “normal” lives, but it is sad to leave our traveling adventures for the time being. Here is our week in Nashville in a nutshell…
We drove the 20 hours to Nashville in one day – a first for us and quite the adventure! We stopped at The Varisty for dinner (a famous hot dog place in Atlanta).
On Sunday we went to a church in Nashville in the morning, ate lunch, went grocery shopping, had some friends over to our condo for dinner, and then headed to their campsite for s’mores. (Hi Julia!) The next day we spent swimming and just hanging out with friends that were also in town for the conference.
Later that evening we went out to dinner at Bob Evans with a family from our church that attended the conference with us. (Hi Desiree!) Tuesday night was the opening session of the conference and we snapped a photo of us with a few girls that were at the Journey. (Hi Gabby, Dani, Callie & Laura!)
In the program that A and I went to, COMMIT, we had to give team presentations. Our team’s topic was how to be the fragrance of Christ. Here we are with friends, on the right, eating lunch at the training center.
Here are our brother S and sister C with their groups, ALERT and Pre-EXCEL. In ALERT, the boys do several rough and tough activities such as hiking through the woods, rescuing an “injured” teammate, getting covered in dirt, catapulting water balloons, building fires, and having an overall good time. In Pre-EXCEL, the girls ages 8-11 do crafts, sing songs, learn about women in the Bible, and memorize Proverbs 31.
K and T are with their Children’s Institute team on the left. In Children’s Institute, the children enjoy skits, songs, scripture memory, crafts, and outdoor games. Next, here’s the other K with her pen pal from Canada she met at a conference many moons ago, and hadn’t seen since.
This is the student choir and orchestra that we were apart of at the conference. We had practices every day after lunch and performed for the parents on the last evening. Last but not least is a picture of us with our friends from church. Seventeen comedians + one cute baby (from two families) = loads of fun!
P.S. There is one last event from the conference that we’re going to blog about. It deserves a post of its own, however, and we’ll save it for a later date.
Stay tuned…
