My poor baby broccoli and cauliflowers are officially dead.  A few weeks ago, on a trip to Home Depot, I decided to try my hand at gardening.  As you can see, my first attempt didn’t turn out so well.  I don’t know where I went wrong… I watered them, gave them sun, followed all the directions on the seed packet, and even gave them plant food.  Oh well.  Maybe next time I’ll plant directly in the ground or try flowers.

Honey Pumpkin Muffins

I just tried this recipe out last night and they turned out great.  I wouldn’t say they’re the prettiest muffins ever, but they are delicious!  They are soft, moist, and best of all – super easy and quick to make!

 Preheat oven to 375°

Beat together 1 cup canned pumpkin, 2 eggs, 3/4 cup vegetable oil, and 3/4 cup honey.

Then add: 1 1/3 cup fresh wheat flour, 1 tsp. baking soda, 1/4 tsp. nutmeg, 1 cup golden raisins, 1 tsp. baking powder, 1 tsp. allspice, 1 cup chopped nuts (I used walnuts).

Mix until moistened. Place in lightly greased muffin tins.

Bake at 350º for 12-20 minutes depending on size of tins.

Enjoy!

Yesterday I participated in a pageant of sorts by a local organization that holds a parade and other events each winter.  I also did it last year with A.  The three winners (a queen and two princesses) will be the youth ambassadors for the events.

It was great practice for public speaking as I had to introduce myself on stage and answer questions both in an interview with the judges and in front of the audience.  I did pretty well, but the three girls who won had done previous pageants and were very rehearsed.

In the interview my questions were, “I see on your application that you play a musical instrument… What type of music do you play?” and “Which hospital do you volunteer at?” followed by “What age people do you usually interact with there?”.  I tried to take each of the topics and run with them, but I fumbled a bit on the first one.

My intro on stage went well… I had to say my number, age, grade, school, city, and something else about me.  I said that I like to create things by knitting, sewing, and cross-stitching and that the dress I was wearing was my latest project.

The question I got for the spontaneous answer on stage was “At what age do you think girls should start wearing makeup and why?”  I said that I don’t think there is really a set age for wearing makeup.  If a girl needs makeup, then it will enhance her appearance by wearing it, but if she she really doesn’t need it, then it can take away from her appearance.

I had a great time and met some fun girls.  I would do it again next year but I’ll be too old then.  A is thinking about doing it with her friend then.  Here’s a photo of me introducing myself.  I can’t get any other pics to show up.

Bargain Shopping

Recently our family has been learning how to be more frugally minded.  We completed Crystal Paine’s Supermarket Savings 101 online course and were introduced to the world of bargain shopping!  It has become quite a hobby for us.  We started taking advantage of the super deals at CVS and Walgreens each week.  We’ve also been clipping coupons and matching them with sales.  Here is a picture of what we bought at CVS today for $0.43 out of pocket.  We also got paid back $18.00 in Extra Care Bucks (the CVS card rewards which you can use like money on your next purchase).

We have really enjoyed shopping frugally.  It allows us to give more to others in need and is great practice for our future lives.  Even if we can’t use an item that is available for free or pennies, we will get it anyway and give it away to someone we know can use it.  I would strongly encourage you to check out the Supermarket Savings class.  Even if you are already a seasoned bargain shopper, I promise that it will be an encouragement to you.

Book Review

I recently read a wonderful book called Before You Meet Prince Charming: A Guide to Radiant Purity by Sarah Mally.  Sarah started a girls’ discipleship program several years ago called Bright Lights.  She also co-wrote a book on sibling relationships with her brother and sister.  Before You Meet Prince Charming is a delightful book about how to serve the Lord during your youth and focus on growing in your walk with Him.  Part of the book is a fictional fairy tale about a young princess who struggles to wait on the Lord and reject the teachings of the world.  The rest of the book contains Sarah’s warm, light-hearted, wise, challenging, and practical advice.  This book is geared towards Christian ladies ages 12 to 90.  It is also a great study tool for girls’ discipleship groups as it icludes suggested memory verses and small projects.  I learned so much from reading this book and was greatly encouraged in my walk with the Lord.  At times, I was unable to put it down!
